Junput

Junput is equally lovable sea resort. It is hardly 9 km from Contai. Junput can be reached either by rickshaw, autorickshaw or by bus from Contai. Dept. of fisheries run museum and pisciculture unit, mainly, for spawn. Unlike Digha beach on the Bay of Bengal, during low-tide Junput becomes very wide and long. Sunrise in Junput is a treat to the eyes of the visitors. From Junput come back to Contai and take a bus for Rasulpur. Get down at Petua

and walk for 3-4 km and you will reach Dariapur. There is lighthouse and a famous old temple-the temple of Kapalkundala. While Bankim Ch. Chatterjee was Deputy Magistrate of Contai, he wrote his famous novel Kapalkundala in the background of this temple. Dariapur is only 15 km from Contai. In the old days there was a small but busy sea port at Hijli, very near Contai. In Marishda which is around 8-10 km from Contai there is a 400 yrs old temple of Jagannath Dev. Other notable thing worth-seeing in and around Contai is the temple of Hatnagar (Jagan?nath) at Egra (17 km from Contai). This Shiv temple was built in 1560-62. On the way from Calcutta to Digha, Tamluk or Old Tamralip-ta town may be visited. Tamralipta was one of the busiest naval port in ancient India. However, no remains of the port can be seen now. There is a very famous temple, the tem?ple of Bargabhima which can be seen at Tamralipta. The temple was built on the bank of the river Rupnarayana. There are also Tamralipta Museum and Sri Ramkrish-na Mission at Tamralipta.

How to reach :-

Junput is about 9 kms from Contai town and is 40 km away from Digha by bus. From Kolkata side you have to drive to Contai and then take a left turn towards Junput.

What to see :-

Brackish water fish Cultivation and Research Center

What to Do :-

Leisurely walks on the beach and picnic in the fir tree plantations. anything you wish.The best place you have ever seen.

What to Buy :-

Fish Drying at Junput (Shutki Preparation
)
Fresh fish from the local fishermen or bone-dried fish ( Shutki )if you can survive the stench.

What to Eat :-

Lots Of Lobster and Pomfret.(Preferbly in Local Dhabas.)

  • Inspection Bungalow It is under the Superintendent of Fisheries, Junput. This is however closed now.
  • Junput Resort . This is the only accommodation available there, 1 km from Junput Bazar. There is no spot booking facility so it is better to book a room before reaching there.
